Sometimes the person staying somewhere notices details most of us would walk straight past.

That was part of what stood out to recent guest Frank Cunningham during a stay at Sky Village at Canyon of the Ancients Guest Ranch.

Frank came to Southwest Colorado with a particularly interesting perspective. As President and CEO of Durango Stone in Scottsdale, Arizona, he has spent years around natural stone and distinctive design projects. During his stay, he had the unusual opportunity to see his company’s materials incorporated into a completely different environment.

What caught his attention, however, went well beyond the stone.

Sky Village isn’t designed to feel like conventional lodging transplanted into the desert.

Its two dwellings, Sky Kiva and Star Tower, draw inspiration from the architectural heritage and ancient structures found throughout the Four Corners region. The ranch describes them as bespoke retreats where Southwestern design, contemporary comfort, and the surrounding landscape come together.

That sense of place is evident in the details.

Natural materials. Stonework. Handcrafted features. Art. Views toward Sleeping Ute Mountain. Spaces that encourage you to notice what’s outside as much as what’s inside.

As the owner of Durango Stone in Scottsdale, Arizona, I’m fortunate to work with clients who create unique projects and are constantly introducing me to great ideas. But what Garry and Ming Adams have created at Sky Village truly blew me away.

From the moment we arrived, I was in awe. Our natural stone had been used throughout the property on floors and walls, including large 16×32 pavers beautifully installed as the base of a stunning onyx sink. Seeing our stone incorporated with such craftsmanship, creativity, and attention to detail was incredibly impressive.

But Sky Village is about so much more than the beautiful stonework. The setting itself is extraordinary. The dwellings are surrounded by massive rock formations, with ancient Indigenous carvings and petroglyphs nearby. Waking early and watching the sunrise over this landscape was something I will never forget.

Garry and Ming went out of their way to make our entire weekend special. We visited Mesa Verde, explored the incredible masonry at ancient cliff dwellings, spent time in Bluff, Utah, enjoyed Navajo dancers, and even had a wonderful massage. Every experience seemed to top the one before it.

At the end of each day, coming back to Sky Village was perfect. It is peaceful, comfortable, and incredibly quiet—the kind of place where you can truly slow down and appreciate your surroundings.

I have traveled extensively and seen many remarkable places, but Sky Village will stay with me for a very long time. The beauty, history, craftsmanship, and hospitality made this an unforgettable experience.

Where Craftsmanship Meets Southwest History
